Postcard : Snowmobiles at the Athabasca Glacier

Iconographic document

Circa 1950

This postcard depicts a colourful fleet of R-series snowmobiles parked in front of the Athabasca Glacier. Spilling from the Columbia Icefield in the Canadian Rockies, this glacier is among the most visited in North America.

The caption on the back indicates that these snowmobiles are also known as “Ice Taxis”, as they are used by tourism agencies to take travellers for a ride through the region’s snowy landscapes.

The photo was taken by Gilbert Morris Taylor, an American photographer who settled in Canada in the 1920s.
