CL-415 scoops

Object

1996

These scoops were installed on Canadair CL-415 amphibious aircraft designed primarily for forest firefighting. These ones were sold to a European operator in 1996. The scoops have openings of about 10 cm by 12 cm, and can collect about 6,000 liters of water in only 12 seconds. A larger opening would be detrimental to the aircraft’s efficiency, therefore, contrary to urban legend, it is impossible for these planes to scoop up a diver! These scoops were damaged during an intervention, probably by floating debris.
