Olympic Torch

Object

1988

Olympic torch from the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. The shape of the torch was designed as a replica of the Calgary Tower. The handle, made of maple wood, has the 10 winter sports pictograms engraved on it. The burner, made of recycled aluminum, features the Olympic motto “Citius, Altius, Fortius,” which translates to “faster, higher, stronger.” The fuel cartridge must be changed every 45 minutes. The Olympic torches were carried by 7,342 torchbearers over a distance of 18,000 km, including 2,750 km by Ski-Doo® snowmobile!
